High Purity Grade Phycocyanin Recovery by Decupling Cell Lysis from the Pigment Extraction: an Innovative Approach

Abstract Phycocyanin, a phycobiliprotein, is one of the few natural blue pigments available as food colourant, and it largely used in industry. We have devised an innovative two-step extraction process which allowed to obtain bright phycocyanin crude extracts with high purity grade P (within 2.5 3.5) directly from fresh biomass Arthrospira platensis Gomont 1892 (commonly named Spirulina). found out for first time exploited ammonium sulphate capability minimize release water soluble phycobiliproteins aqueous medium during ultrasound-assisted cell lysis/purification phase. The conventional sequence is, followed by purification, was reversed. phase decoupled lysis. Cell lysis, accomplished ultrasonication solution, merged purification single step, before pigment extraction/recovering entirely carried solutions. No downstream required products suitable most common applications (i.e. foods, nutraceuticals). Production time, hours instead days, reduced advantage product quality. has great advantages (1) direct use extracting solutions that cannot be ordinary (because extensive simultaneous contaminant molecules), (2) gain commercial value due elevated (3) production highly concentrated (up about 5 mg mL ?1 ) immediately hand market.
